6. THE ROTI COMMUNITY

Meet Chef Andy:

Working closely with our executive chef, Davinder Pal Singh, is Chef Andy. His full name is Ashutosh Arora and he grew up in Agra, near the Taj Mahal, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the most populous state in India with a population exceeding that of France, Germany and the Netherlands combined (according to Wikipedia). Andy undertook 3 years of chef training at the Industry Training Institute and then worked in a curry factory as well as in the Oberoi Hotels group. His favorite dishes are Rajasthani recipes because they are a lot more spicy than Uttar Pradesh cuisine. He likes to feel the 'fire inside' by using a lot of chili paste and hot sauce. So if you really like hot and spicy food, ask for it 'Chef Andy Style'.

Michael Ondaatje in the Bay Area:

June 13, 2007, 1.30pm book signing at M....is for Mystery, In San Mateo.
June 13, 2007, 8PM at the Herbst Theater (tickets at City Arts and Lectures, Inc).

"Michael Ondaatje fuses exuberant storytelling with jazz rhythms and luxurious imagery in his bestselling novels. Born in Sri Lanka, educated in England, and currently a resident of Canada, Ondaatje draws on a wealth of sources to inspire his rich imagery. He emerged as one of Canada's most respected young poets in the 1960s, though he is best known as a novelist. His works of fiction include The English Patient, In the Skin of a Lion, Coming Through Slaughter, The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, and Anil's Ghost. He received the 1992 Booker Prize for The English Patient, a non-linear narrative of four people living in an abandoned Italian villa at the end of World War II. In 1996, The English Patient was adapted into an Oscar-winning film. Ondaatje's new novel Divisadero leaps from Petaluma to Paris as it delves into a story about the demands of history, family, and love. With his wife, Linda Spaulding, Ondaatje edits the literary journal Brick."
